What are dental implants?
A dental implant is a small, precision-engineered titanium post that is surgically placed into the jawbone to replace the root of a missing tooth. Titanium is used because of its exceptional biocompatibility — the bone naturally fuses with the implant surface through a process called osseointegration, creating a permanent, stable foundation that functions just like a natural tooth root.
Once the implant has fully integrated with the bone (typically over 3–4 months), a custom-designed crown is attached via a connecting component called an abutment. The completed restoration — implant, abutment, and crown — replicates the appearance, strength, and function of a natural tooth, allowing you to eat, speak, and smile with complete confidence.
Unlike bridges, which depend on adjacent healthy teeth for support and require those teeth to be permanently reduced, or dentures, which sit on the gum surface and can move or loosen over time, dental implants are entirely self-supporting. They are fixed permanently in place, require no adhesives, and — critically — stimulate the jawbone in the same way natural tooth roots do, preventing the bone loss that occurs whenever a tooth is left unreplaced.
Dental implants are widely regarded across the dental profession as the gold standard for tooth replacement — not just because they look and feel the most like natural teeth, but because they are the only option that truly addresses the long-term consequences of tooth loss at every level.
